Important info on the Title IV E waiver Posted: 08 May 2012 09:10 PM PDT HEADS UP FAMILY RIGHTS THIS APPLIES TO ALL STATES. Went to a state meeting on the Title IV E waiver. For those who do not know what that is, it was passed by Congress giving leniency to 28 states to use the federal funding for family preservation. Here is the latest skinny: Only two states out of the 28 have applied so far even though it was passed months ago. Part of this is the feds are dragging their feet but the other reason is most states don't know how to put together a new program required for this so they are sticking their heads in the sand. WA State got lucky because the Bill Gates foundation is paying to bring in consultants from Baltimore to help them figure it out. I also found out that each state can waiver whatever they want to. Doesn't necessarily have to go for family preservation. Family preservation is one of three areas they can waiver. SO, it is critical for you activists to push this through and make sure your state is on target for the waiver and applying it correctly. More info to be coming on this later. From Jan Smith |
Science Tells Us How To Have A Healthy Pregnancy; Should The Law Punish Women Who Don’t? Posted: 08 May 2012 08:47 PM PDT Science Tells Us How To Have A Healthy Pregnancy; Should The Law Punish Women Who Don't? Everyone agrees that a pregnant woman shouldn't smoke crack or snort meth, right? And the consensus that they shouldn't smoke cigarettes or throw back a six-back every night is fairly ironclad, as well. Beyond obviously harmful behaviors like alcohol and drug use, however, things get more complicated. And with good reason: Mothers' own needs and health must be carefully balanced with the needs and health of potential children they're carrying. After all, pregnant women aren't simply baby incubating machines. But try telling that to the state of Alabama. |

Idaho Supreme Court Reunites Family Torn Apart By Deportation Posted: 08 May 2012 07:12 PM PDT Idaho Supreme Court Reunites Family Torn Apart By Deportation The Idaho Supreme Court issued a forceful decision late last month, ordering that a father who lost his child to adoption after he was deported to Mexico should regain custody of his daughter. The ruling overturned the decisions of two lower courts to terminate his parental rights. As countless other courts around the country consider similar cases of families shattered by deportation and the child welfare system, the Idaho decision could serve as a model in a relatively uncharted legal field. |
