Statement from Secretary Sebelius on National Foster Care Month

Each May, National Foster Care Month provides us a special opportunity to focus on the nation's more than 400,000 children and youth in the foster care system. It is a time for us to raise awareness about the urgent needs of these young people and encourage all Americans to get involved – as foster or adoptive parents, volunteers, mentors, employers or in other ways. With the help of more Americans, many formerly abused or neglected children and teens will be able to reunite safely with their parents, be cared for by relatives or be adopted by loving families.

Now, my dream isn't for anyone to feel sorry for Nancy. Nancy got herself into this position. Hefty, The Official Luggage of the Foster Care System

The bad news: There are over 400,000 kids in foster care in the US, many of whom are moved four or more times per year. Its no wonder they feel unwanted. It has been estimated that 50% of foster kids end up homeless when they age out of the system. These kids are approached by a trafficker (pimp) within 48 hours of being homeless. The fourth time a trafficker approaches a homeless youth (often with a burger and fries), the young person succumbs. Thats how abused kids end up in prostitution. When these young people find themselves in a life they cannot get out of, they often medicate themselves. Thats how abused kids end up on drugs.
